  • Museum options: the National Archaeological Museum and the National Museum of Natural History.
  • Bus information: year-round departures run in both directions between Sofia Sever and Dragoman.
  • Train information: BDZ’s travel guide lets you check available trains and buy tickets online.
Start with Sofia's cathedral square

Start with Sofia's cathedral square

Patriarchal Cathedral St. Alexander Nevsky is a clear starting point for a day among Sofia’s central landmarks. The cathedral stands at Alexander Nevsky Square, with the historic centre and museum stops forming the rest of this itinerary.

Its working hours are 7:00–19:00 every day. Morning worship is at 8:00 and evening worship is at 17:00; the Friday prayer canon is at 17:30, and Sunday Holy Mass begins at 9:30. If you plan to visit during a service or take photographs, contact the cathedral first, as photography rules and other visitor access rules are not stated.

After the square, continue on foot through the historic centre towards the museum area. Keep the cathedral’s service times in mind when planning your stop, and check current visitor arrangements before setting out.

Walk through Sofia's historic centre

Walk through Sofia's historic centre

Sofia’s historic centre connects the cathedral square with central museums and other civic landmarks. Take this part of the day as a walk between stops, rather than treating the museums as isolated destinations.

The National Archaeological Museum is at 2 Saborna Street, the National Museum of Natural History is at 1 Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, and the Regional History Museum–Sofia is at 1 Banski Square.

For a broader plan connecting the city with Dragoman, the Dragoman-to-Sofia day trip covers the journey as a day out.

Choose a museum stop

Choose a museum stop

Sofia’s central museums offer different stops for a day itinerary: the National Archaeological Museum focuses on archaeology, while the National Museum of Natural History presents exhibitions. Opening patterns and admission differ, so choose one that fits your timing.

National Archaeological Museum

The National Archaeological Museum is at 2 Saborna Street. From May through October, it is open 10:00–18:00 every day; from November through April, it is open 10:00–17:00 and closed on Mondays. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.

Adult admission is BGN 11.73/EUR 6, while pupil and student admission is BGN 2.93/EUR 1.50. Admission is free for everyone on the last Sunday of each month, and for pensioners on the second Thursday of each month. The museum closes on 25 December and 1 January; on 24 and 31 December, its hours are 10:00–14:00.

National Museum of Natural History

The National Museum of Natural History is at 1 Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard. Its exhibitions are open Monday–Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:30. It closes on 1 January, 3 March, Eastern Easter and 25 December; on 24 and 31 December, exhibition hours are 10:00–13:00.

Adult admission for visitors over 18 is €6.50. Pupils, students and retirees pay €3.50, and children aged 3–6 pay €2.50.

Admission is free for people with disabilities and their companions, children under 3, and retirees on the first Tuesday of each month. For further museum context, the National History Museum in Sofia is another subject to consider when planning a museum-focused visit.

Museum hours, prices and holiday arrangements can change, so check the official site before you go. For the Archaeological Museum, use the National Archaeological Institute with Museum’s official information; for the Natural History Museum, consult its official visitor information.
